Whale Watching Season in Samaná: What to Know
Humpback whales move through Samaná Bay for a few months every winter, and a handful of combo tours from Punta Cana time themselves around it. Season matters more here than with almost any other tour on this list — book outside the window and the whale watching portion simply isn't running.
When it runs
Whale season in Samaná runs mid-January through mid-April, tracking the humpback migration into the bay to mate and calve — the Taíno cave paintings found in Los Haitises suggest whales have been wintering here for centuries. Outside that window, boats still run to the same spots, just without the whales, so the combo tours below shift into their standalone waterfall and island versions.
Whale Watching + Cayo Levantado
An A/C bus first, then a double-deck catamaran out into the whale sanctuary in Samaná Bay to watch humpbacks that run up to 15 meters long, followed by a stop at Cayo Levantado, a small island beach a short crossing away. About 10 hours round-trip. Adults $159, kids 3–12 $99. See the tour →
Whale Watching + El Limón Waterfall
Same whale watching boat out into Samaná Bay, paired with El Limón Waterfall — a roughly 130-foot drop — plus a Dominican lunch on the Samaná Peninsula. About 10 hours round-trip. Adults $169, kids 3–12 $99. See the tour →
Whale Watching Half Day
The shorter version for travelers who want the boat and the whales without adding a second stop — out to Samaná Bay, a coffee break at Las Cañitas on the way back, and you're back at the hotel by around 2:00 PM. About 6–7 hours total. Adults $120, kids 3–12 $60. See the tour →
Bottom Line
Outside whale season, El Limón Waterfall + Cayo Levantado (about 10 hours, adults $149, kids 3–12 $89) and Playa Rincón + Cayo Levantado (about 12 hours, adults $169, kids 3–10 $99) still run as standalone trips, just without the boat out to the whales.
