Saona Island or Catalina Island: Which Is Right for You

Saona Island and Catalina Island are the two boat day trips people cross off the list first in Punta Cana, and almost everyone asks the same question before booking: which one? The short answer is that they're not really competing for the same day — one is a beach day, the other is a snorkeling day — so it comes down to what kind of tired you want to be by sunset.

The boat cuts through water that goes from deep blue to glass-clear turquoise the closer you get, until you're standing waist-deep at the natural pool with starfish resting in the sand around your feet. Then Saona itself: palm trees leaning out over white sand, a BBQ buffet lunch and open bar waiting, and nothing left to plan for the rest of the day. It's a full day inside the Dominican Republic's East National Park. Adults $79, kids 4–9 $50, free under 4. See the tour →

Mask on, a deep breath, and the reef drops away beneath you into deep blue — Catalina is the snorkeling day, a guided swim of about 45 minutes at The Wall with gear provided, then beach time with a Dominican BBQ lunch and drinks. The Catalina + Altos de Chavón option adds a stop with entry included, plus a lunch buffet, open bar and snorkeling. Catalina Island $99, Catalina + Altos de Chavón $119 (kids $60). Runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday only. See the tour →

Which one to choose

If the picture in your head is a lounge chair, a plate of BBQ and a natural pool you barely have to swim to reach, that's Saona. If it's a mask fogging up right before a reef comes into view, that's Catalina. Both include round-trip hotel transport and free cancellation up to 24 hours before — the only hard constraint is Catalina's limited departure days, so if your trip is short, check the calendar before you decide.

FAQs

Which is better for kids? Saona — no set snorkel requirement, more beach time, and it runs daily. Catalina Island's own option has a minimum age of 2 and isn't for pregnant guests.

Can I do both in one trip? Yes, if your stay is long enough — they don't overlap since Catalina only runs three days a week.

Which has better food? Saona: BBQ buffet lunch and open bar. Catalina: Dominican BBQ lunch with beer, rum, sodas and water on the base option, or a lunch buffet and open bar on the Altos de Chavón version.

Bottom Line

Either one makes a full day out of Punta Cana, and neither is the wrong choice — they're just built for a different version of a beach day. If your group wants both the lounge-and-lunch feel and a guided snorkel in one trip, Catalina + Altos de Chavón covers more ground than either option alone.
