Money Exchange Tips for Punta Cana

Punta Cana runs on both the Dominican peso and the US dollar, so exchanging money before your trip isn't strictly necessary — the gap between a fair rate and a bad one still adds up fast over a week of vendors, tips and the odd souvenir.

Do you need pesos at all?

Dollars work almost everywhere here — hotels, restaurants, tour operators, most shops on the strip. Plenty of travelers get through a full trip without touching a peso, and nobody blinks if you pay in dollars the whole time.

Where to exchange

ATMs and banks land closest to the official rate. Local exchange offices around Friusa and downtown usually tack on a small markup, and airport or hotel exchange counters carry the biggest one of the three — worth avoiding for anything beyond pocket change.

Using ATMs

Pull out a larger amount in one withdrawal to spread the flat fee over more cash, and check with your card issuer ahead of time about foreign transaction charges — some stack their own fee on top of the ATM's.

Tipping

Pesos or dollars both work for tips, so there's no need to change money specifically for gratuities.

Bottom Line

Carrying dollars for the whole trip is completely normal here. Change a small amount only if you want pesos on hand for local vendors or transit outside the resort area.
